This is Iowa Open Week

The Brokers International Iowa Open returns to the LPN this week for its seventh year. The three-day tournament kicks off at 8 a.m. Friday and runs through Sunday afternoon. A full field of 144 golfers is expected. Local professional golfers entered include John Dinnebier, LPN director of operations; Gary Babcock, LPN head golf pro; and Justin Smool, first assistant pro. Two other pros with local ties who will be in the field are Jaron Smool and Zach Hammerberg. Local amateurs registered are George Appleseth, Will Babcock, Reid Cobb and Kolby Shackelford. Everyone will play both Friday and Saturday. Sunday’s final round will be limited to the top 70 players and ties. Pairings for the first two days of the tournament are available at www.iowapga.com.

Iowa Open Reminders

Admission to the tournament is free, and spectators are encouraged. For the second year, there will be a Party Hole for Sunday’s final round between #13 and #14. There will be $1 draft beer and other drink specials beginning at 11 a.m. Spectators then can follow the final group of golfers to the 18th green for the awards ceremony. The Links Restaurant will be open after the event to support post-Iowa Open celebrations.

A Volunteer Appreciation and Kickoff will be held 5-6:30 p.m on Tuesday at Spikes. Volunteers in any capacity are welcome to stop in and have a light supper.  This includes those hosting golfers in their homes, helping with parking or signage or tents, or working on the course during the competition. This is a "come and go" event where volunteers can pick up a new shirt to wear during their shifts. Golf course employees and setup volunteers also can pick up their shirts that evening. Anyone who can't attend but would like to make arrangements to pick up their shirt prior to Friday can contact Julie Wykoff at jaallen9@aol.com, or 515-778-0053.

Some volunteer slots still remain open. The highest priority for additional volunteers is Sunday, where several slots remain. Sunday shifts start between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., depending on the hole assignment, and last until play is completed, which should be four to five hours. There also are open shifts both Friday and Saturday afternoon. These shifts start between noon and 1:30 p.m.

Friday through Sunday, the volunteer check-in tent will be located by the pro shop where volunteers will need to check in about 15 minutes before the start of each shift. A set of guidelines/instructions will be distributed. Coffee and refreshments will be available each morning, plus lunch, snacks and bottled water provided to volunteers each day they work.

The pro-am tournament will be played Thursday. A draw party where each four-person team is matched with a professional player will be Wednesday, beginning at 6 p.m. at the LPN conference center.

The LPN Wednesday men's golf leagues and Thursday women's golf league will not be held this week because of the Iowa Open.
