This is Iowa Open Week

The Brokers International Iowa Open returns to the LPN this week for its sixth year. The three-day tournament kicks off at 8 a.m. Friday and runs through Sunday afternoon. Admission to the tournament is free, and spectators are encouraged. New this year for Sunday’s final round will be $1 beer and other drink specials near the #13 hole beginning at 11 a.m. Gary Soreide, tournament director, encourages spectators to bring a chair or blanket and watch the golfers throughout Sunday’s round. “We thought having a place for people to gather and cheer on the competitors for their final round would be a fun addition to this year’s tournament,” Soreide said. “After the final group goes through, we hope spectators will follow the golfers the rest of the round.”

Dylan Jackson of Kohler, Wis., won the open division of the 2014 tournament and is scheduled to return to defend his title. Also in the field is Javier Sanchez of Fayetteville, Ga., who won the professional senior division last year. Local professional golfers entered include John Dinnebier, LPN general manager and director of golf; Gary Babcock, LPN head golf pro; Jaron Smool; and Zach Hammerberg. Local amateurs registered are Will Babcock, Bill Douglass, Jordan Eng and Les Marks. Everyone will play both Friday and Saturday. Sunday’s final round will be limited to the top 70 players and ties. Pairings for the first two days of the tournament are available at www.iowapga.com.

Iowa Open Reminders

Volunteers for the Brokers International Iowa Open are invited to a free dinner Tuesday at Spikes from 5 to 7 p.m. This includes those hosting golfers in their homes, helping with parking or signage or tents, or working on the course during the competition. This is a "come and go" event where first time volunteers can pick up a shirt to wear during their shifts, and all volunteers will receive an appreciation gift. Final schedules for on-course volunteers will be distributed. The schedule will include the time to check in at the tent near the pro shop. Organizers Julie and Larry Wykoff and Reuben Hanson would like to have a few people they can call on short notice if a need arises. If you can help, email Julie at jaallen9@aol.com, or call 515-778-0053

The Wykoffs and Hanson also are coordinating the pro-am tournament, which will be played Thursday. A draw party where each four-person team is matched with a professional player will be Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m. at the LPN conference center.

The LPN Wednesday men's leagues and Thursday women's league will not be held this week because of the Iowa Open.
