Volunteer Opportunities at Brokers International Iowa Open

The Iowa Open is fast approaching. Many thanks to those you have already volunteered for housing, facilities and helping on the course during the August 14-16 tournament. After matching up current on-course volunteers with critical holes that need to be covered, additional volunteers are needed. Another 10 volunteers are needed both Friday and Saturday morning, 15 volunteers Friday and Saturday afternoons, and five volunteers Sunday. Please consider taking one or more of these openings. Shifts run about four hours, and start times vary depending on the hole. Volunteers get a lunch at Spikes each day they work.

Julie and Larry Wykoff and Reuben Hanson are coordinating volunteers. Those who have volunteered in the past can email Julie at jaallen9@aol.com with days and times available. A signup form is online at www.iowaopen.com. A problem with the form was discovered this week, so if you submitted one prior to July 15, please resubmit to make sure your information was received. Signup forms for new volunteers also are available in the LPN pro shop and at Spikes. Questions? Call the Wykoffs at 515-778-0053 or Hanson at 641-757-2434.

Iowa Open Volunteer Appreciation Dinner August 11

If you plan to volunteer in any way for the Brokers International Iowa Open, mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 11, for the Iowa Open Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at Spikes. This event is for those who volunteer on the golf course during the three-day tournament, but also those who assist with parking, putting up and removing tents and signs before and after the event, those who house golfers, and standard bearers for the final round. Stop by Spikes 5-7 p.m. for a bite to eat and to pick up your volunteer appreciation gift. First time golf course volunteers also will be able to pick up their burgundy Brokers International Iowa Open shirt.

The Links Dinner Specials Thursday-Saturday

Peter Makens, the new executive chef in The Links kitchen, is offering dinner specials each Thursday, Friday and Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m. This gives diners a chance to try some new dishes, and Makens a chance to learn what might fit well on a new menu. This week's appetizer is bacon-wrapped shrimp with a sweet and sour barbecue sauce. The Wedge Salad features a wedge of iceberg lettuce, house made blue cheese dressing, gorgonzola cheese, thick cut bacon, tomato and red onion. The sandwich special is a prime rib wrap, featuring shaved prime rib, Swiss cheese, grilled peppers, red onion and horseradish sauce. This week's entree is Peppercorn Steak Au Poivre — peppercorn encrusted beef tenderloin, with brandy cream sauce and potato gratin. Save room for the strawberry shortcake — homemade short cake, citrus infused strawberries, vanilla bean gelato and whipped cream. Sounds delicious!

Rally for a Cure Fundraiser Thursday

The LPN women's league is sponsoring its annual Rally for a Cure fundraiser Thursday. This event is open to all LPA women golfers, and cost is $20. Garden stakes in the shape of pink ribbons are being sold for $5 each. Buyers can write tributes to loved ones on the ribbons, which will be on display in LPN flowerbeds. The event also will include a silent auction, the "Bling out a Bra" competition, and a 5:30 p.m. shotgun. Donated items for the auction are welcome. More details online.

Murder Mystery & BBQ for Friday Couples

A perfect summer Friday night should involve golf and barbecue, especially when you're golfing with your sweetie and friends, and someone else is running the grill. This week's Friday night couples offers both! The golf is a murder mystery, rescheduled after a rain out in May. Sign up as a couple to play with another couple, or the pro shop can match you. Gather at Spikes around 5 p.m. for a 5:30 p.m. start. Cost is $10 per couple. Because of a private event in The Links dining room, the only indoor service that evening will be in the bar. So after golf, plan to gather on the pool patio for a $10-per-person cookout. The menu will include burger and chicken breast sandwiches, sides, ice tea and lemonade. There also will be a cash bar. Call the pro shop at 641-755-2024 to get registered for the golf, then simply show up for the barbecue!

LPN Club Championship Next Weekend

Wednesday is the deadline to get signed up for the 44th LPN Club Championship next weekend, with an 18-hole round both Saturday and Sunday. There is one women’s division, with play from the red tees. There are three categories for men. The open division is for players 16 years of age and up, and played from the blue tees. A senior division is for men 50 and older, with play from the white tees. A super senior men’s division is for those 70 and older, with play from the red tees. Prizes will be awarded in both gross and net divisions, with flights based on the number of entries. Entry fees are $25. The Junior Club Championship Saturday is a 9-hole event, open to all LPN junior members, and recommended for ages 7 through 15. Play will be from the red tees and begin at 5:30 p.m. Parents are asked to help caddie and score for their junior players. Entry fee is $10. Call the pro shop at 641-755-2024 to enter.

New Pro Shop Merchandise

With all the golf opportunities this week, plan to get to the LPN pro shop a little early and check out the wide array of merchandise available. A new shipment of Tervis Tumblers has arrived, plus new apparel items for both men and women. There also are plenty of golf equipment options available - clubs, balls, markers. And a wide selection of accessories - towels, umbrellas, caps, socks, shoes. Take time to shop!

Mixed Couples Tournament August 1-2

A few slots remain for the annual LPN Mixed Couples tournament August 1-2. Couples play as partners, with men from the white tees and women from the red tees. Both partners drive and each plays a second shot with the other’s ball. After the second shot, choose the best ball and alternate shots from there. Cost is $150 for LPN members and $230 for non-members, which covers golf, Saturday dinner and prizes. Registration is noon Saturday, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. that day, and 9 a.m. on Sunday. Entry form available here or call the pro shop at 641-755-2024.
