New Chef Offers Dinner Specials

The new chef in The Links kitchen is Peter Makens, who has a goal of preparing all menu items 100 percent from scratch. He comes to Lake Panorama National after five years as the sous chef at Centro in Des Moines. For this week, Makens has planned a set of dinner specials that will be offered nightly Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with one special in each of six categories. The appetizer will be coconut shrimp — hand-breaded jumbo shrimp with Cajun marmalade. In the salad category, there will be a strawberry spinach salad, with strawberry balsamic vinaigrette, Brie cheese and candied pecans.

The sandwich special will be a Béarnaise Burger — a half-pound patty, blue cheese and red onion topped with homemade Béarnaise sauce. Shrimp Scampi will be the pasta offering, with handmade fettucini pasta and shaved parmesan reggiano. Pan seared salmon will be the fish special, which will be served with garlic mashed potatoes, spinach, and ruby red grapefruit butter sauce. To finish things off, the dessert special will be a Biarritz Sunday — a homemade brownie, vanilla bean gelato, scratch chocolate sauce, roasted peanuts, and toasted scratch marshmallow.

Make plans now to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend at The Links with some of these delicious dinner specials!

Farewell Reception for Harris Family July 3

A farewell reception for Mike, Gina and Michael Harris will be held at the LPN on Friday, July 3, 4-6 p.m. Mike and Gina are moving to Lincoln, Neb., and Michael to California. Guests are invited to come and go throughout those two hours to enjoy refreshments and wish the trio well, after their many years of service.

Fourth of July Couples and Long Drive Contest

The annual Fourth of July couples tournament will be Saturday, July 4, with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Sign up with another couple in the LPN pro shop. The cost is $25 per couple for LPN members and $90 per couple for non-members. This is an 18-hole, four-person best-shot tournament. There will be a potluck at Spikes following golf, so bring a dish to share, and if you’d like, something to grill.

The annual Fourth of July long drive contest will begin at 5:30 p.m. on the #1 tee. Entries will be taken on the teebox that day, with a cost of $5 for three drives. There will be a women’s division, a youth division for ages 18 and under, and age categories for men of 19-30, 31-45, 46-64, and 65 plus.

Dan Lehman Memorial Tournament July 11

The annual Dan Lehman Memorial golf tournament will be Saturday, July 11, with an entry deadline of Monday, July 6. This is a four-person, best shot event. Entry fees are $30 for LPN members and $60 for non-members, and cover green fees with cart, range balls and lots of prizes. Registration is 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12 p.m. Lehman died in March 2008 of a heart attack while skiing in Colorado. His family hosts this memorial tournament, with money raised supporting LPN junior golf programs. Entry form here.

John Staebell Memorial Tournament July 12

The John Staebell Memorial Golf Tournament will be Sunday, July 12. Entry fees for this four-person, best shot event are $30 for LPN members and $60 for non-members. That covers green fees with cart, range balls, hole-in-one contests, dinner and prizes. Registration is at noon with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Staebell died at his Lake Panorama home in March 2011, after a three-year battle with cancer. He was a 43-year member of the Knights of Columbus, so the group’s annual golf tournament was named in his honor. Funds raised go to Timber Creek Charities, the Panora Fire Department and Knights of Columbus charities. Entry form here.

Rally for a Cure Fundraiser July 23

The LPN women's league is sponsoring its annual Rally for a Cure fundraiser on Thursday, July 23. This event replaces regular league play that evening, and is open to all LPA women golfers, not just league members. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. and include a silent auction, the 2nd annual "Bling out a Bra" competition, the sale of pink ribbons for the Memory Garden, and a 5:30 p.m. shotgun golf event. The cost is $20 per person, and registrants can choose from one of four magazine subscriptions. Donated items for the silent auction are being sought. All proceeds from the evening will be donated to Rally for the Cure. More details online.
