LPN Weekly - 8/4/2013

New Name, New Look for Weekly LPN Newsletter

Regular readers of this weekly e-newsletter for Lake Panorama National will notice a couple of changes. A new name — LPN Weekly — replaces the previous name of Weekly Word. The new name makes it clear this weekly newsletter is all about providing LPN news for the coming week, plus a sprinkling of details on past and future events.

Also, the switch to a new email distribution program makes it possible to include graphics and photos in the LPN Weekly. So a colorful masthead was designed, and now tops the weekly email. The masthead also appears on the LPN website. Check it out here.

19th annual Ryder Cup Kicks Off Thursday

The first LPN Ryder Cup was held in 1995 with 12 players. The 19th Ryder Cup that kicks off Thursday will host 92 players. Team captains are Kevin Wood and John Bruckshaw. The kickoff begins at 6:30 p.m. and will include teams being announced, shirts/caps and pairings distributed, a short program and dinner.

Play begins Friday at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start, using a four-ball format. Play continues Saturday with an 11 a.m. shotgun. For the first nine holes, the format is two-man best shot, followed by two-man alternate shot on the second nine.

A shootout will be held both Friday and Saturday night, sponsored by Guthrie County State Bank. The LPN employee shootout is at 5 p.m. Friday. Saturday's shootout will feature the 10 low gross and 10 low net players from that day’s round. Spectators are welcome and dinner follows both shootouts.

The final day of competition is Sunday, with tee times starting at 10 a.m. The format is individual match play. Dinner and awards follow golf. The annual Irv Gerlich Memorial Ryder Cup is named in recognition of the foundation Gerlich built for today’s Lake Panorama National Golf Resort and Conference Center.

Women’s League Rally Raises Money

The annual LPN women’s league Rally for the Cure July 25 raised nearly $2,000. There were 46 participants for this 13th LPN Rally. The theme was “Breasta Fiesta” and featured the LPN Gringos along with other amigos on the course assisting with fun and games on every hole. The night was deemed a success as the gals worked their way around the course eating jalapenos and dodging the kissing bandit.

More than $1,000 was raised for the Rally for the Cure/Susan G. Komen for the Cure, with participants paying a $20 entry fee and donating cash for special on-course events. An additional $823 was raised for Guthrie County Relay for Life through a silent auction of donated items. Participants received a thermal lunch tote, early detection information, a greeting card and pink-ribbon golf pin. In addition, Iowa Radiology donated a thermal cooler for each golfer, filled with bottled water and a snack courtesy of the women’s league.

Since its start in 1996, the Rally program has touched more than two million people with the important message that early detection saves lives. Photos from the event may be found here.

Volunteers Still Needed for Iowa Open

A full field of 144 players is expected for the Brokers International, Ltd. Iowa Open Aug. 16-18. Volunteers still are needed, especially for afternoon shifts. Volunteer coordinators Ed McCollom and Kathy De Lucca say they need at least 20 more volunteers for afternoon shifts on both Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16-17.

In addition, there are a few openings for morning shifts all three days, but afternoons are the most critical need. Shifts will last about four hours, and start times depend on hole locations. All volunteers receive a meal at Spikes either before or after their shift, plus get to see some great golf up close! To volunteer, contact McCollom at 515-314-5000 or De Lucca at 641-755-3116.

This is the third year the tournament is open to a limited number of out-of-state players. The first 104 slots are reserved for Iowa residents or those with Iowa ties. Another 40 slots are available to out-of-state professionals. Those 40 slots have been taken, and a waiting list created. If the slots reserved for Iowans aren’t filled by Tuesday at 3 p.m., another 15-20 out-of-state players are expected to register.

That probably will mean more calls asking for housing in private homes. Kent and Shirley Stephenson are coordinating placing golfers in private homes. Contact them at 641-755-3787 to volunteer to host an out-of-town golfer.
