42nd Annual Club Championship in the Books

The 42nd annual LPN Club Championship was held Saturday and Sunday, with about 70 golfers competing in four divisions. Ethan Mechling won the men’s open division with a two-day total of 155. Todd Madson also scored a two-day total of 155 to take the senior men’s division.

Denise Norwood won the women’s division with a two-day total of 174. George Appleseth won the junior division with a nine-hole round of 36. More results of the club championship are available here.

LPN Mixed Couples Tournament Aug. 3-4

Registrations must be in by Thursday for the few slots remaining for the annual LPN Mixed Couples tournament Aug. 3-4. Mixed couples play as partners, with men from the white tees and women from the red markers. Both partners drive and then each plays a second shot from the other’s ball location. After the second shots, choose the best ball location and continue with alternate shots until the ball is holed.

Entry fees are $150 per couple for LPN members and $225 for non-LPN members. Fees includes prizes, two days of golf with carts, practice balls, dinner on Saturday and continental breakfast on Sunday. Shotgun starts are 1 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday. Event is limited to the first 72 paid couples. A sign-up sheet is available here.

Field is Full for 14th Annual Forward Tee Open

The 14th annual Forward Tee Open will be Aug. 6. The event began as a way for LPN women golfers to celebrate the construction and completion of the forward tee boxes on the golf course. The tournament is organized by a small committee of volunteers, with the help of John Dinnebier and the pro shop staff.

The event has for many years hosted a full field of 144 golfers on 36 teams. Because this is such a popular event, teams playing the previous year receive informational letters and registration forms in late May, giving them the opportunity to register for this year. A waiting list carries forward, with new requests coming in each year.

The field is made up of about two-thirds non-members and one-third LPN members. The tournament is a good chance to showcase to outside guests all that Lake Panorama National has to offer.

2013 Brokers International, Ltd. Iowa Open

For the fourth year in a row, Lake Panorama National Golf Resort is gearing up to host the Brokers International, Ltd. Iowa Open. The 2013 tournament will be Aug. 16-18, with a pro-am Aug. 15. The LPN previously hosted the Iowa Open from 1985 to 1998. There is no admission charge and spectators are encouraged.

Volunteers are needed for morning and afternoon shifts Aug. 16-17, with only morning shifts Aug. 18. Shifts will last about four hours, and start times depend on hole locations. Contact Kathy De Lucca at 641-755-3116 or Ed McCollom at 515-314-5000.

Kent and Shirley Stephenson are coordinating placing golfers in private homes. Contact them at 641-755-3787 for more information or to volunteer to host an out-of-town golfer.

This is the third year the tournament is open to a limited number of out-of-state players. The first 104 slots are reserved for Iowa residents or those with Iowa ties. Another 40 slots are available to out-of-state professionals. Those 40 slots have been taken, and a waiting list created. If the slots reserved for Iowans aren’t filled by Aug. 6, players on the wait list can register.

A reminder tee times are available at Panorama West for weekends and holidays. Maureen Lubeck, clubhouse manager, says golfers are appreciating the opportunity to have set tee times on busy days, rather than the first-come, first-served option used on weekdays.

The Panorama West pro shop is open daily 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. A large selection of food and beverage items is available, including microwave popcorn, both hot and cold sandwiches, and a wide selection of chips and ice cream treats. Hot dogs and brats also are available. For more information, or to make a tee time, call 641-755-2250.
